Five Poems

Riyad al-Salih al-Hussein

Our Beautiful Life

Life is beautiful
says the sparrow
and drops dead beside the hunter’s shoe

Life is beautiful
says the rose
and drops dead in the handsome boy’s palm

Life is beautiful
he says
and shoots himself in the head

Life is ugly, despicable, corrupt, evil
says the tyrant
and takes a bite from a biscuit

15/11/1979

I’m a ripe grape
Come and chew me with delicate teeth
I’m a nearby love tree
In my shade, take shelter from the September sun
I’m a wild flower
Crushed beneath a tank
Won’t you pluck me before I die?

Paper

It was a piece of white paper
Blank white paper
No lover wrote a letter on it
Nor did the state print on it a law
Paper white and pristine like spring
Untouched by any hand
No fingers ripped it up
It wasn’t an ID
Nor a free visitor’s pass for the detention centers
Only a piece of white paper
I offered my lover
Who wrote on it the words “I love you”
And could not kiss me

Syria

Syria, beautiful and happy
Like a fireplace in winter
Syria, miserable like a bone
Between a dog’s teeth
Syria, cruel
Like a scalpel in a surgeon’s hand
We are good children
Who have accepted your bread, your olives and your lashes
Forever shall we lead you to wellsprings
Forever shall we dry your blood with verdant fingers
And your tears with dry lips
Forever shall we forge paths for you
And never leave you lost
Syria
Like a song in
A desert

Even Wolves

When you’re sad
Rivers are sad with you, and boats
Willows and grey sparrows
Mountains and bedroom lamps
Curtains and the sunlight
The heart in the chest
Fish in the rivers
Even wolves in the wilderness
Even wolves
Bury their heads in the sand and cry
