Summary
The turnout for Asymptote’s autumn poetry event in Beijing was impressive, with some 90 people filling the One Way Space bookstore in Beijing to hear the esteemed panel of speakers present diverse perspectives on the topic of Chinese poetry and the influence of translated poems on Chinese contemporary poetry. Discussions on this theme by Ouyang Jianghe and Wolfgang Kubin were engaging and enlightening. Xi Chuan gave a great performance of a piece by Eliot Weinberger, while readings by Song Lin and Zhu Zhu were equally impressive. The level of enthusiasm among the audience matched the captivating quality of the speakers in Beijing. Afterwards, sustained by hot tea and hot fruity drinks served by the bookstore kitchen, audience members queued to ask questions and have their books signed, resulting in the event lasting much longer than expected.
