What’s New with the Crew? A Monthly Update

Another month and another slew of publications and projects by our team members!

Very quickly: two pieces of housekeeping news before our regular update! First, thanks to 84 backers, we’ve managed to raise $12,896 for our upcoming feature on the Muslim-majority countries banned by Trump, with 20% of funds raised donated toward the ACLU and Refugees Welcome. (This fundraiser has received coverage in The Bookseller and more will be forthcoming at The Chicago Review of Books and at the Ploughshares Blog. If you’re from a high-profile media outlet and would like to help us spread the word, please drop us a note!) The more we raise, the bigger and more comprehensive our April showcase can be; in fact, we’ve already launched our call for new work in response to Trump’s executive order (Deadline: Mar 15). Only 33 days remain to contribute to our fundraiser; don’t wait, make your stand against the #MuslimBan today!

Poetry Editor Aditi Machado was recently featured in conversation with Jane Wong on LitHub. She also spoke on a panel with Pierre Joris, James Shea, and Jennifer Kronovet about ‘Translation as a Political Act‘ at the AWP Conference 2017.

Assistant Editor Alexis Almeida‘s translation of Roberta Iannamico’s Wreckage has been selected for publication in chapbook form by Toad Press. It will be released in late summer or fall of this year.

Slovakia Editor-at-Large Julia Sherwood‘s new translation of Balla’s award-winning novella In The Name Of The Father, co-translated with Peter Sherwood, has been announced as forthcoming from Jantar Publishing, scheduled for May.

UK Editor-at-Large M. René Bradshaw‘s review of Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie at the Duke of York’s Theatre, directed by John Tiffany, recently appeared in The London Magazine. 

Chief Executive Assistant Theophilus Kwek has written an essay for the Stephen Spender Trust’s website on translation and displacement. He has also launched the second issue of his co-edited poetry journal, The Kindling, and published a new poem in Wildness Journal. 

Indonesia Editor-at-Large Tiffany Tsao has published a translation of a poem by Norman Erikson Pasaribu in Cordite Poetry Review‘s special issue on “Confession”.

Chile Editor-at-Large Tomás Cohen has published poems in the most recent issues of Edit (Leipzig), and PARK (Berlin), in translation by the prize-winning poet and essayist Monika Rinck, a contributor in our Fall issue. Further poems of Tomás have been published bilingually in NOX, a journal for young literature from Hamburg.

From poetry to graph theory to dance, we've been keeping busy.

Poetry Editor Aditi Machado‘s poem ‘Route: Desert’ was recently published in Poor Claudia.

Drama Editor Caridad Svich‘s new play, Archipelago, premieres in the UK on 24th November at the Lighthouse in Poole, directed by Stephen Wrentmore. Her essay, ‘Six Hundred and Ninety-Two Million: On Art, Ethics and Activism’ recently appeared on Howlround.

Romania and Moldova Editor-at-Large Chris Tanasescu, aka MARGENTO, co-authored an academic article on artificial intelligence with Bryan Paget and Diana Inkpen that has recently been published in the Journal of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence. This is part of an ongoing research project, The Graph Poem, led by MARGENTO that applies graph theory to poetry computational analysis and poetry composition or generation.

Contributing Editor Ellen Elias-Bursac‘s translation of Hotel Tito by Ivana Bodrožić will be published by Seven Stories Press. Read an exclusive excerpt in Asymptote‘s Spring Issue! She has also just been elected Vice-President of the American Literary Translators’ Association.

Assistant Editor K.T. Billey, who also edited Asymptote‘s recent Special Feature on Canadian Poetry, has three new poems in the latest issue of the Denver Quarterly.

We've been keeping busy!

Spanish Social Media Manager Arthur Dixon’s essay, Surrealism on the Subway: Translating ‘Universidad—Indios Verdes’ by Arturo Gutiérrez Plaza was recently published on World Literature Today.

Drama Editor Caridad Svich‘s La Isla de Los Hombres Solos (The Island of Lost Souls)—inspired by Jose Leon Sanchez’ novel—premieres this month at Teatro Espressivo in San Jose, Costa Rica under Jose Zayas’ direction. She will also speak on a panel sponsored by the Brooklyn Academy of Music at the Brooklyn Book Fair with Chuck Mee and Kaneza Schaal, in conjunction with a production of Phaedra.

Contributing Editor (Chinese) Francis Li Zhuoxiong, also a two-time Golden Melody Award Winner for Best Lyricist, will have a book out on 2 September to commemorate his twenty illustrious years in song writing. Celebrated lyricists Jonathan Lee and Lin Xi have penned introductions for this book, which will also include this interview conducted for Asymptote‘s debut issue.

Contributing Editor George Henson’s translation of Alberto Chimal’s short story, ‘The Waterfall’, has been published in The Best Small Fictions 2016 anthology by Queen’s Ferry Press.

Assistant Editor K.T. Billey wrote about the Icelandic language and Instagram art for Guernica. 

Assistant Managing Editor Lori Feathers’s review of Annie Proulx’s Barkskins was published in The Rumpus, while her review of Pamela Eren’s Eleven Hours appeared in Rain Taxi. Lori served as a judge for the 16th Annual Raymond Carver Short Story Contest, and the winners will be published in the October issue of Carve Magazine.

The shortlist for the 2016 PEN New Voices Award, whose judging panel includes Editor-in-Chief Lee Yew Leong, has been released. The winner will be announced later this month during the 82nd PEN Congress in Ourense, Galicia.

Editor-at-Large for the UK Megan Bradshaw has joined The London Magazine as a staff writer, where she recently reviewed a performance of Yerma at the Young Vic.

Editor-at-Large for India Poorna Swami published a vignette, “A Pillar in Covent Garden,” in Coldnoon: International Journal of Travel Writing & Travelling Cultures. 

Finally, Chief Executive Assistant Theophilus Kwek will be hosting ‘5 Under 25’, a reading of new Singaporean poetry, on 3 September, and moderating a conversation with novelist Krishna Udayasankar on ‘Writing and Identity’ in Singapore on 9 September. His new poetry journal, The Kindling, co-edited with Tash Keary, has also just opened its first submissions call.
